Braun Series 5 5030s

The Braun Series 5 5030s is a foil style model from Brauns acclaimed Series 5 collection of mens shavers. Its hard not to be impressed with the glowing customer reviews of the shaver that you can find online, so we were anxious to put the technology found in this shaver to the test. Read on for a complete evaluation of the features and performance of this foil shaver.

The Basics/In the Box

The Series 5 5030s Electric Shaver exudes quality. The moment you touch it you can feel that its a higher end foil shaver. Weighty and well proportioned to fit into your hand, the shaver has a perforated leather type grip along the sides that improves your grip and provides padding for comfort while you shave. This is a high end feature thats not found in the designs of many other models on the market today.

As a higher end shaver, the 5030s  does retail for more than many other foil shavers on the market. The suggested retail price is £159.99, but we did find it for sale for less than £95 on Amazon. While it does cost more than the Series 3 models, you get a number of advanced features with this shaver that makes it well worth the extra money. Braun includes a travel bag, a protective cap, a cleaning brush and a bottle of oil with the model.

Operation and Ease of Use

Constructed in Germany, the Series 5 electric shaver has a number of advanced technologies that make it an efficient, highly effective model. The head of the shaver pivots 40 degrees to navigate facial curves. When youre shaving difficult spots like under the nose, you can lock the head in one of five adjustable positions to improve precision. All of the blades are individually suspended, allowing the shaver to better adapt to the contours of the face. Along the neck and chin, the UltraActiveLift technology raises hairs up, so that the oscillating trimmer can sweep them away without any hassles.

Results After Shaving

With the 5 5030s, you can easily get results similar to manual shaving with a high quality razor. We found that the shaver could handle a 3-day beard rather quickly and with perfectly smooth results. While it does not include the Optifoil technology found in the Series 7 models from Braun, this shaver still provides a very close shave and keeps skin stubble free for a satisfying length of time.

Sensitive Skin?

Where the Braun Series 5 5030s Electric Shaver really shines is in the area of skin protection for sensitive complexions. The shaver has a PowerDrive system that makes it very efficient, but the unique design of the head provides superior protection from razor burn. Although the model provides a close shave, it does not cut deep in the skin, reducing the risk of ingrown hairs. The only feature that it lacks is the ability to wet shave for men who prefer a lubricated shave. To get added wet shaving functionality with the other features of this shaver, we recommend the Braun Series 5 5040s-5.

Battery Life

When fully charged, the electric shaver provides 45 minutes of continuous shave time, which is a little short for a shaver of this price range. Fortunately, the shaver does have a five-minute quick charge option that allows you to repower the battery enough for a complete shave in just 5 minutes if you forget to charge. The battery also recharges quickly; it only takes an hour for it to be completely replenished. A very simple battery indicator light comes on when you need to charge. We would have liked to have seen a better indicator that would let us monitor battery life more precisely.

Cleaning and Care

With its waterproof design, the Braun Series 5 5030s Electric Shaver is rather easy to clean. You can rinse it off after use, and it has a hygiene indicator to let you know if more intensive cleaning is required. A cleaning brush is included for brushing off hair in between uses as well. The foil and cutter cassette on the head should be replaced every 18 months, making maintenance less frequent with this shaver than what you experience with some similarly priced models. We had no trouble locating a replacement cassette online.

Special Features

The shaver has a precision trimmer that pops up with just a simple slide of the finger along the sides. Its a handy feature for trimming sideburns and facial hair, and we found that it cut more quickly than trimmers on other shavers weve tested. We also like that the 5030s is made for travel. The cloth bag and protective cap make it easy to pack, and the model has Smart Plug with dual voltage technology for use in outlets worldwide without the need for a voltage adapter. A battery lock is built into the design to keep the shaver from coming on in your luggage.

Final Thoughts

Overall, were impressed with the Braun Series 5 5030s Electric Shaver and recommend it for men who dont always shave every day and want to be able to get a very close shave quickly. Its also an ideal choice for men prone to sensitivity; however, men with very sensitive complexions may benefit more from the 5040s, which has wet and dry shaving technology. The shaver is easy to maintain, durably crafted, and its only real shortcomings are its shorter battery life and basic battery display. These drawbacks shouldnt be enough to dissuade you from opting for the Braun shaver, as they are greatly outweighed by the benefits of the model.

Electric vs Traditional Shaving: Pros and Cons

One of the constant battles in the shaving world, apart from many others, has to be electric vs manual razors. And like many other battles, it is often unnecessary as there are no definitive rights or wrongs here. In this article we’ll take a step back and present an objective and to the point overview of the advantages and drawbacks of each. Let’s get right to it! Pros of Electric Shaving 1. Convenience and speed. One of the main reasons for switching to electric shaving is for the pure practical aspect of it: no more lengthy, thorough prep work, no more lathering, and no more hassle to clean and take care of your shaving arsenal. You just pick up your electric shaver and get straight to shaving. After that you can just throw your shaver into the automated cleaning and charging station and that’s about it. 2. Comfort. Traditional shaving implies the use of a sharp blade and that inherently comes with some risks. Of course that careful prep work and proper technique can gre...

Panasonic Arc3 vs Braun Series 3: What’s the Best Entry Level Electric Shaver?

Entry level electric shavers represent a highly competitive segment. The reasonable purchase price, low running costs and excellent price/performance ratio are among the things that make these razors very appealing to the potential buyer. My Electric Shaver Doesn’t Shave – What to do?

I’ve seen this statement pop-up on message boards and comment sections quite often and usually all electric shavers get an unfair, collective bashing. And I say unfair because in the vast majority of these cases the culprit for the sub-par performance of the shaver can be objectively pinpointed and fixed. The typical scenario involves a recently bought electric shaver that fails to perform as expected: hairs left behind, not shaving close enough and so on. It’s quite common to also be the user’s first experience with an electric shaver, but that’s not always the case. If your electric shaver doesn’t shave, there a few factors at play. Let’s check them out and see what we can do. 5 reasons why your electric shaver doesn’t shave 1. Your shaver is just plain bad. I know this sounds pretty blunt and radical, but that’s the main cause in the vast majority of my shaver doesn’t shave situations. There is a plethora of electric shavers out there: different types, different manufa...
